A Shortage Of Social Housing In The UK

There has been a great deal of progress made along the lines of social housing in the UK. Once thought only to house the degenerates of society, it is being made known that most people who live in social housing are there due to truly unforeseen circumstances, such as job loss or illness. These are people that for years worked hard, paid their taxes, and are good law-abiding citizens.

However, due to something tragic that has happened, they have been forced to turn to social housing in order to keep a roof over their heads. After all, what is a beautiful home if you can't keep food on the table because the payments are too high?

One of the ways that people benefit from social housing is that the rent is income based. This means that only a set amount of the total income coming into the home is used for the payment of rent. This is really good for the family who can only find jobs in the lower income levels. They are able to have decent housing and still take care of their families without having to rely on friends and family to bear the brunt of the financial responsibility.

Social housing in the UK is government owned and operated. There are specific income guidelines that must be met in order to qualify for these homes. Housing is assigned according to need. The person or family that needs it the most will always get it first.

The housing may be owned by a local government or even by a central government. The housing itself must meet specific codes in order to qualify and continue to be available. They can also be owned by registered local landlords or social landlords. These landlords are non-commercial and not-for-profit organisations.

There are several housing associations that are involved in social housing. The most common association is one that is comprised of tenants along with local organisations and even local businesses. Housing associations help maintain regulations in all existing housing, and assist in making sure that new construction meets all codes and regulations.

The purpose behind all social housing in the UK is to provide safe homes that are available to the people that are working at a minimum wage level of pay. Too often it is impossible to find housing, at a low enough cost, which is also in good condition and in a safe area for these workers. Without social housing, many people would be living in homes that are below standard and may not even meet building codes, if they even had a home at all.
Unfortunately, there is a larger need for social housing in the UK than what exists.

There are still many people who have been waiting, some for many years, to get into a decent home. However, this is slowly becoming rectified as more and more social housing is under new construction. In fact, there has recently been tremendous headway toward new construction now that commercial organisations have the opportunity to build and manage their own social housing units.
