We are nearing the arrival of a tremendously debated prophecy. The debate is so intense because we know the exact date and time this prophecy occurs. The 2012 prophecy Mayan calendar is to take place on December 21, 2012 at 11:11 GMT. The Mayans suggest that there will be a catastrophic event, and the ending of a calendar that began on August 11, 3114 BC, coupled with Nostradamus' overdue apocalyptic predictions, the location of the sun in the Milky Way galaxy, (directly in the center), the Chinese Four Pillar Chart for December 21, 2012 as being a time in which great catastophy and calamity occurs, and propheteers the world over blogging about the apocalypse, citing biblical warnings relating to history, and we have a recipe for some serious concern.
While this prophecy warrants consideration, we must not look only at the hysterical side of the argument. The 2012 prophecy Mayan calendar is one of several "dates of doom" to have either passed, or that are upcoming. If you are a young person, born in the 1980s, you have already survived what many people thought was Nostradamus' predicted end-date for earth, the Y2K scare, and the arrival of the Hindu avatar Krishna in 2003. Some potentially big dates loom. Of course, there is 2012, the planetary alignment of 2040, in 2076, the Muslim calendar will come to an end, and the Jewish calendar concludes in 2240.
But 2012 holds merit both for people seeking patterns based on prophecies and for scientists. To begin, as I mentioned above, there are a lot of events that line up to 2012. The Mayans say that the sun will pass through the cosmic womb, or the center of the galaxy, which can also be translated as the place of the dead, of regeneration, and of transformation. Meanwhile, scientists predict abnormally high sunspot activity. But some simply compare this event to the rolling over of an odometer. We will just start our next cycle.
Whether the 2012 prophecy Mayan calendar will commence in brimstone or in a normal winter day remains to be seen. But one must appreciate the ancients for the accuracy demonstrated by this calendar, and must acknowledge the coincidental alignment with other events and predictions. Personally, I hope for a nice rolling over to the odometer on December 21, 2012 at 11:11 GMT, and a pleasant morning with my children.
