A swing set in your backyard is wonderful for getting the kids outside and playing. It's one of the easiest ways to get your kids to be active. But they do take up a lot of space. How do you decide how much swing set to buy for your children?
Cost
The first thing you need to consider is how much you can afford to spend on a swing set. Swing sets and playground climbers can range from a few hundred to thousands of dollars. Just as with any other major purchase, you should have some idea as to what you are willing to spend before you start shopping. You can drool over the out of your budget models if you like, but pay the most attention to ones you can afford.
Don't forget the cost of any safety features you may want to add. Many families just install playsets on the lawn, but it is always a good idea to consider if you can put in wood chips or something softer than the ground for safety when children fall.
Space Available
How big is your backyard? How much of that space are you willing to give over to a fairly permanent fixture in the form of a swing set?
A swing set takes a bit more space than the area it is built upon. There should be room for children to run around it, and of course space for the swings to swing freely. Children lean way back when they swing, so you need to leave enough space that they won't hit any obstacles with their heads as they play.
Style
What kind of a playset are you looking for? Just a basic model with a couple of swings and a slide? Something with a fort? What about a rock climbing wall? The range of features and styles is simply amazing these days.
Take into consideration how long you want your kids using the swing set. You can buy a simple toddler size swing, but what about the long run? If you're spending the money, you should buy something the kids will love as many years as possible.
Is It Over the Top?
Most of us love the looks of the really amazing playground climbers, the ones that have so many features you're going to wish you could play too. But take some time and think about if that's really right for your needs.
Look at the factors I've mentioned above. Is a really amazing playground climber really a fit for what you're able to handle? Would you hate the space one takes?
Think about how you're really going to feel when you finally buy. If you are confident that a really big swing set or climber is going to be right in your yard, go for it! But if you realize that it would take up too much space and be an inconvenience to the rest of the family, find something that better suits your needs. The kids will be happy in the long run with just about any swing set you provide them.
