Distance learning programs have become very famous due to the host of advantages they offer to students that includes better access to learning resources, learning at any age any time, wider access to educational institutions and reduced costs of learning. However, like any other educational program distance education also has some disadvantages. If you want to enroll for a distance education program, it is better to evaluate these pros and cons to make an informed decision.

Distance Learning Advantages

- One of the biggest advantages of distance education is the flexibility and time benefit it provides. It is not compulsory for you to attend class everyday, for a set number of hours. With a computer and internet connection you can attend your classes from anywhere and complete your assignments at any time. It offers what is called a self-paced study wherein you can devote the exact amount of time you would need to complete a particular subject.

- Online distance educational programs do not require you to commute to a particular institute regularly. So you can save a lot in terms of time and transportation costs. You can complete your assignments at home and submit them online.

- With distance education, you can have access to a wide array of schools or colleges. If a person lives in an area where there are no good colleges, then he or she can opt for the online education provided by some renowned institute. This greatly expands your options for education.

- Another great advantage that distance learning provides is that you can continue your education simultaneously while working. When you are on the job, it is much easier to complete distance education programs than traditional education courses.

Distance Learning Disadvantages

- Online educational programs do not suit everybody. Some students typically need personal attention and motivational talks from the instructor and if you are one such student then it better to think twice before enrolling for a distance educational program.

- There is no personal or social interaction between students in the online learning programs. You will have to study alone. If you are one of those who love to be in the classroom set up, then online educational programs are not right for you. However, you can keep in touch with your fellow mates with the help of discussion boards, emails, video conferencing and chat rooms.

- Distance learning programs require you to be internet savvy and technologically sound. If you have not worked in such an environment then it may be difficult for you to adjust to online programs.

- There are some companies who would not accept online degrees; they only trust the traditional courses and degrees. So think carefully and research in your job fields about the prospects of the online degree.

For those who do not have time and money to attend regular classes at the college, distance education has become a blessing. It not only provides anywhere anytime learning concept, but also costs less compared to traditional educational programs. As more and more institutes have started providing distance learning programs, the benefits will be reaped by many people in future.
